Working with Images – Detailed Notes

Digital Images

Images such as photos, logos, graphs, and charts are used to make documents visually appealing and easy to understand. These are stored in formats like .jpg, .png, .gif, and are made up of pixels — tiny dots represented in binary form (0s and 1s).

Inserting Images

You can insert an image in LibreOffice Writer in different ways. Using the Insert > Image option opens a dialog box to select a file. You can also drag and drop an image from your computer or use copy-paste from another document.

To reduce document size, link the image instead of embedding it by enabling the Link option in the insert dialog or dragging with Ctrl + Shift.

Modifying Images

The Image Toolbar provides options to rotate, crop, flip, resize, or adjust image brightness, contrast, and color. Filters like Charcoal Sketch, Mosaic, and Posterise add effects to make images more creative.

Click on View > Toolbars > Image to enable the Image Toolbar if it’s not visible.

Drawing Tools

LibreOffice Writer also offers drawing tools for diagrams, callouts, and flowcharts. These tools can be enabled from View > Toolbars > Drawing. You can draw rectangles, circles, arrows, and more. Text can be added directly into these shapes.

Customizing Drawing Objects

Use the Drawing Object Properties toolbar to change fill color, border style, line width, and text formatting inside the shapes. You can apply changes before or after creating the object.

Grouping and Resizing

Multiple shapes or images can be grouped so they move and resize as one. Use the Group tool after selecting all objects with the Shift key. Resize with corner handles to maintain proportions, or edge handles for one direction only.

Image Positioning

Once inserted, images can be precisely placed using various layout tools:

Arrangement – Set layering order like “Bring to Front” or “Send to Back”.
Anchor – Link the image to a page, paragraph, character, or frame.
Alignment – Position images left, center, top, etc., within the document.
Text Wrapping – Control how text flows around the image: wrap left, right, through, or none.

Summary

Images not only beautify documents but also help convey messages clearly. LibreOffice Writer offers powerful features to insert, modify, and manage images. Use filters, drawing tools, and formatting options to create professional and interactive documents efficiently.
